Photo Archive

WWI Photo archive of 65 photos of war in France, including many of American soldier Frank Holder from the 185th Aero Squadron, an airborne division of the US Army Air Service. Holder's photos are taken in the postwar occupation of France, with the rest of the photos being captioned images from military installations during the war. Photos range from 3" x 2" all the way to 9.5" x 6.5." Many photos with contemporary captions in addition to present day captions on white labels, which identify equipment, locations, and Holder himself. The photos in the archive are an assortment of photos of locations in France during world war 1, including the ruins of Reims, Varennes-en-Argonne, Rembercourt, among others. The 185th Regiment saw combat, being deployed at the very end of the war, but were notably the only night time fighter pilots organized by the U.S., earning the moniker "Bats" for their activities. There are many photos of the planes operated by the Bats, which were primarily garrisoned at the Rembercourt air field, a strategic location near Verdun. The aircraft include the Sopwith Camel, Fokker D. VII, Spad XII, Breguet 14, as well as some unidentified German plane that was shot down in the Somme. We can also see tank and troop formations going through the war zone of Northeastern France, a German march of American POWs, naval vessels such as the USS Liberation, and Entente anti-submarine ships. Album pages have some chipping along margins, but the photos are clean and sharp.
