[CIvil War] Signed document regarding temporary assignment of an officer. Department of the South: 1864. Measures 5 x 8 inches. Order reads in part, "During the temporary absence Lieut-Col James F. Hall 1st Regt N.Y Vol. Engineers, Provost Marshal General, Department of the South...All orders and instructions heretofore given to Lieut-Col Jas F. Hall will be carried into execution by Lieut-Col Bennett." The 1st New York Engineer Regiment was an engineer regiment that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. It was also known as Serrell's Engineers,[1] New York Volunteer Corps of Engineers,[2] or Engineer's and Artisans.[2] The regiment served initially in the Lower Seaboard Theater, and later in the Richmond–Petersburg Campaign. Very light toning along edges. Overall very good condition.
