Original photo mounted on board of the coeducational Pomona College class of 1909, taken as freshmen in 1905. Photo measures 6.75" x 5" inches on a 8.5" x 6.75" inches board A class of around 70 students with almost half being young women. Handwritten inscription on verso states: "Dec. 21st, 1905.- 09's [class] on top of Holmes' Hall Pomona College, Claremont." Pomona College is one of the oldest colleges in Southern California and was established as a coeducational and nonsectarian Christian institution on October 14, 1887, amidst a real estate boom and anticipated population influx precipitated by the arrival of a transcontinental railroad to Southern California.
