Photo Archive

[African American] HBCU North Carolina A&T State University Graduation, 1940's Archive of 21 Original Photographs. Each black and white silver gelatin photograph measures 3.25" x 3.25". The college was established in 1891 with the intention "to teach practical agriculture and mechanic arts and such branches of learning as relate there to, not excluding academic and classical instruction" to African American citizens of North Carolina. By 1928, the college began to admit female students. Several photographs capture Black students in cap and gown on their graduation day, family and friends in close proximity. The photographs appear to capture the end of the graduation ceremony, as several students take photographs around the campus. Several young women wear matching white dresses, pearl necklaces, and white heels, and pose atop a grassy field on campus with diplomas in hand. In another photograph, two young men pose with diplomas in hand. Another image captures a couple posing on a ledge of a staircase, the boyfriend sports a fashionable white suit. Penciled annotation on the verso of one image reads "Send to Ruby". This archive is in very good condition.
