Original caption pasted to verso (in part): “French women to cast first vote. Paris – For the first time in the history of France women have the legal right to vote...To qualify for voting, Frenchwomen must be 21 years of age and establish proof of legal residence. Approximately seven or eight million Frenchwomen are expected to cast votes when the election will be held, February 10, 1945.” As World War II was still being fought in Europe, the French provisional government passed legislation that guaranteed women the right to vote. Frenchwomen enthusiastically registered to vote for the first national election since the liberation of France from Nazi occupation. Rippling at left and right edges.
