Julia Ward Howe's Biography, First Edition

First Edition

[HOWE, Julia Ward]. RICHARDS, Laura E. and HOWE ELIOTT, Maude. "Julia Ward Howe: 1819-1910." Boston and New York, 1915. First Edition in 2 Volumes. Octavo, original brown cloth and paper boards with gilt spine and titles. One of only 450 copies printed. 23 illustrations and frontispiece portrait of Howe. Includes original newspaper clipping of Howe with her family and of Miss Julia Ward Howe Hall, Howe's great-granddaughter pasted in Vol. 1.

A women's suffrage leader and abolitionist, Howe is best known for penning "The Battle Hymn of the Republic." This biography authored by her two daughters compiles for the first time a large portion of her unpublished work. Edgewear, crack down front cover, toning to pages. Binding strong and tight with remarkably clean pages. Overall in good condition. This book was clearly owned by a dedicated reader: An original newspaper clipping of Howe with her daughter, granddaughter, and great-granddaughter was affixed to the inside cover, as well as a 1923 newspaper clipping showing a society photograph of a young couple on their wedding day, almost certainly the owner; and an original ownership inscription noting this book was received "Christmas 1915"
