[Literature] Salinger, J. D. Army flight school yearbook, 1942, with photographs of the future author of The Catcher in the Rye during his training before deployment in World War II. Salinger trained at Bainbridge Army Air Field in Georgia after being drafted in Spring 1942. His wartime service would later include combat with the 12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division, participation in the Normandy landings at Utah Beach, the Battle of the Bulge, the Hürtgen Forest campaign, and entry into the Kaufering IV subcamp of Dachau in April 1945. The yearbook captures Salinger immediately prior to these campaigns that biographers identify as formative to his postwar fiction. During his time at Bainbridge, Salinger published stories in national magazines including The Saturday Evening Post and Collier’s, and began constructing his Caulfield and Glass family stories.

The Bainbridge period coincided with Salinger’s transition from aspiring short story writer to nationally published author, preceding both his overseas deployment and the psychological strain that followed his combat service. His correspondence with Ernest Hemingway during the European campaign and later fictional treatments of war trauma in stories such as “For Esmé—with Love and Squalor” have been directly connected by scholars to his experiences between 1944 and 1945. This yearbook commemorates Salinger's early wartime training in the American South, photographic documentation of the young writer before his wartime trauma, literary fame, and later withdrawal from society. Damp staining to verso; light shelfwear to boards; binding tight; pages clean. Overall very good condition. A contemporaneous military yearbook containing Salinger’s portrait, showing one of the most influential postwar American novelists training for combat in World War II.
