Kennedy, John F. Five press photographs from September 1963 document the final months of Kennedy’s presidency through encounters with political opponents, members of his administration, senior military officials, and the Washington press corps. Made approximately two months before his assassination on November 22, 1963, the images preserve the public and governmental settings of a presidency then confronting Cold War diplomacy, nuclear arms policy, Vietnam, and intensifying domestic political opposition. One photograph places Kennedy in conversation with Republican Senator Barry Goldwater, who was emerging as a leading conservative critic of the administration and would become the Republican presidential nominee in 1964.

Five original vintage press photographs comprising four black-and-white images and one color 8 x 10 inch photograph, September 1963. One black-and-white print bears a “United Press International Photo” stamp on the verso, identifying its circulation through a major international news service. One image shows Kennedy speaking directly with Goldwater. Two others show Kennedy addressing the press with members of his cabinet and high-ranking armed forces officials positioned behind him, recording the close visual relationship between presidential statements, news coverage, civilian administration, and military leadership. These photographs were produced for contemporary editorial circulation, giving newspapers and other news outlets images through which presidential appearances and government activity could be presented to the public.

September 1963 fell within the final ten weeks of Kennedy’s life and a period of sustained public debate over the recently signed Limited Nuclear Test Ban Treaty, American policy in Vietnam, and relations between civilian and military leadership. Goldwater was already attacking Kennedy administration policies during this period, making their appearance together particularly characteristic of the political opposition developing ahead of the 1964 election. The press photographs retain the immediacy of images created for contemporary news distribution rather than later commemorative publication. All five photographs are in excellent condition. A closely dated group preserving Kennedy’s public interactions with political, administrative, and military figures during the final months of his presidency.
