American Comedy History Jerry Lewis Inscribed Early Portrait Photograph
Manuscripts & Autographs
Lewis, Jerry. Inscribed portrait photograph preserves the youthful comic persona of an actor, comedian, director, and screenwriter whose physical humor became a defining feature of postwar American entertainment. Lewis first achieved broad popularity through his partnership with Dean Martin and later developed a solo career across motion pictures, television, stage performance, writing, and directing. The photograph supports research into celebrity representation, comic performance, Hollywood publicity, and the circulation of autographed images between performers and their audiences. The Library of Congress identifies Lewis with occupations including comedian, actor, motion-picture producer and director, screenwriter, composer, and singer.Black-and-white signed photograph, apparently an early image, 8 by 10 inches. Lewis is shown seated on a stool and directing an exaggerated comic expression toward the camera, using facial performance and bodily posture to project the deliberately awkward, childlike screen character associated with much of his early work. Inscribed in ink, “To Stephanie — All good wishes Jerry Lewis ’02,” indicating that Lewis personalized the earlier portrait in 2002. No studio credit, publication markings, or inscriptions on the reverse are reported.
The combination of a youthful publicity image and a later personalized inscription connects Lewis’s early comic self-presentation with his enduring public recognition decades afterward. His long career and work in multiple creative roles make the photograph relevant not only as celebrity memorabilia but also as evidence of how a carefully developed comic identity continued to circulate among admirers. Clean and well preserved, with the inscription clear and legible and no defects reported; overall near fine. A personalized example of Lewis’s distinctive visual comedy, signed for a named recipient late in his career.
