Japanese American 442nd Regimental Combat Team Wartime Photographs and Veterans Bulletins, Archive of 24 Items, Documenting Japanese American Military Service in Italy during World War II documenting the Japanese American 442nd Regimental Combat Team, centered on 18 original wartime photographs, circa 1944–1945, including photographs taken during the Italian campaign and in war-damaged Naples. The archive also includes a 1944 contemporary magazine article on Japanese Americans in addition to 442nd veterans' publications through which Japanese American veterans recorded and commemorated their wartime military experiences.

The 442nd Regimental Combat Team was activated in 1943 and was composed primarily of Japanese American enlisted men, although many of its commissioned officers were white. The 442nd was thus a segregated Japanese American unit operating within an Army whose senior command structure remained largely white, while many of the soldiers' families were incarcerated in American internment camps under Executive Order 9066.

Archive includes 18 original wartime silver gelatin photographs, circa 1944–1945, each approximately 2 x 3½ inches, form the historical core of the archive. Several photographs show Japanese American soldiers and other servicemen in camp, including several views with a white American officer. The camp photographs are especially strong in documenting the men within the everyday environment of the 442nd rather than only in formal military portraits. Soldiers appear standing and seated in informal groups among rows of canvas tents, vehicles, equipment, and temporary camp structures, giving a sense of the scale and organization of the unit's wartime encampment. Several photographs prominently record the identity of the unit through 442nd Regimental Combat Team insignia and signs. In one, a group of servicemen holds a large 442nd Regimental Combat Team sign overhead; another shows a soldier posed beside a unit sign. Other images show men gathered casually among tents and military equipment, preserving the less formal side of service between movements and combat operations. Together these camp views provide a contemporary visual record of the Japanese American enlisted men, their officers, and the physical military setting in which the regiment lived and operated during the war. Also includes several wartime photographs of WW II Naples, each captioned in manuscript “Naples” on the lower white margin. The 442nd arrived in Italy in late May 1944, landing at Naples after sailing from the United States before moving north and joining the 100th Infantry Battalion. These photographs record the city during the war: American servicemen, military trucks and Jeeps appear amid streets and buildings visibly damaged by bombing and warfare. One view includes the Basilica dell'Incoronata Madre del Buon Consiglio, its monumental dome rising behind war damaged buildings, while other views show Italian civilians and US Army military personnel moving through streets bordered by partially destroyed structures. English-language American military signage is visible in at least one photograph., the images provide a contemporary record of Naples as an Allied military center and war-damaged Italian city during the period of the 442nd's arrival and deployment in Italy. From Naples, the regiment moved north to Civitavecchia, northwest of Rome, where it joined the 100th Infantry Battalion and was attached to the 34th Infantry Division. The combined unit entered combat on June 26, 1944, beginning a difficult advance through mountainous country against German forces. Over the following weeks the 442nd fought northward through Tuscany toward the Arno River, making the Naples photographs a particularly evocative record of the regiment's point of entry into the Italian campaign immediately before its first major combat operations.Another wartime photograph, identified in manuscript as “Italian village,” records a small settlement spread across an agricultural valley beneath mountains, adding a rural Italian view to the photographs of Naples. Taken together, the photographs document both the men of the 442nd in their military environment and the physical landscape of their European wartime service. Photographs show age toning and light handling wear; overall very good condition.

The archive also includes additional printed material that provides context before and after the wartime photographs. Included is an approximately eight-page magazine article, circa 1944, on Japanese American life and anti-Japanese suspicion in California, with a feature headed “THE NISEI” and “CALIFORNIA CASTS AN ANXIOUS EYE UPON THE JAPANESE-AMERICANS IN ITS MIDST.” Also present is the 13th National Nisei Veterans Reunion, Los Angeles, 1982, approximately 100 pages and illustrated, together with four issues of the Go for Broke Bulletin, Honolulu: 442 Veterans Club, 1998, each issue containing about 48 pages of articles and printed photographs and notices concerning veterans memories, decorations, reunions, and commemoration of the 442 Regimental Combat Team. Light toning, edge wear, handling wear, and occasional small edge losses to the printed material. A more than fifty-year documentary record centered on original photographs of the 442nd and its wartime environment in Italy in 1944–1945, supplemented by contemporary and veterans' material documenting the larger Japanese American experience surrounding the regiment's service.
