Spanish Comics, Los Supermachos

Archive

[Mexico and Latino][Comic][Counterculture] Archive of ten issues of Spanish-language comic Los Supermachos,1968–1971. Rius (Eduardo del Río). Los Supermachos. Mexico City: Editorial Posada, 1968–1971. Ten issues: Nos. 90-94 and 96-100. All in original pictorial wrappers. A ten-issue archive of Los Supermachos, the groundbreaking Mexican comic created and written by Rius (Eduardo del Río), a foundational figure in Latin American political cartooning. Known for his sharp wit and socialist leanings, Rius used Los Supermachos as a medium for incisive cultural criticism and populist pedagogy. Originally launched in 1965, the series satirized the PRI government, Catholic Church, and imperialism, while engaging themes of class struggle, political corruption, and Mexican identity. This sequence dates from 1968 to 1971 and includes several thematically significant issues. No. 90 is explicitly "dedicado a los negros" (dedicated to Black people), a rare Afrocentric issue in the history of Mexican comics. No. 97 focuses on the Russian Revolution, and No. 100 is a "número doble especial del primer centenario," commemorating the Mexican independence centennial. Nos. 98 and 99 deal with political atheism and self-critical social commentary, respectively. Through bawdy humor and working-class characters like Calzonzín and Don Perpetuo, Rius transforms the comic form into a vehicle for anti-racist, anti-authoritarian critique. Each issue features editorial cartoons, gag strips, fictional dialogues, and satirical adverts.

Pages toned due to cheap newsprint, occasional edgewear or faint foxing. Some exhibiting light chipping to edges. Overall good to very good condition. An archive of comic books representing Rius’s political and artistic style. Collections of Los Supermachos in this range and condition are uncommon outside Mexico.
