Tidyman, Ernest. Shaft is a 1970 detective novel central to African American popular culture and the emergence of the Black action hero in American fiction and film. John Shaft’s New York investigations placed a Black private detective at the center of a genre long dominated by white protagonists, and the novel became the basis for Gordon Parks’s 1971 film starring Richard Roundtree. Tidyman later explained that he wanted “a black hero who thinks of himself as a human being, but who uses his black rage as one of his resources, along with intelligence and courage,” a statement that clarifies the book’s significance within Black representation, crime fiction, and 1970s mass culture.

The novel follows private detective John Shaft through New York City and supplied the source for the MGM film adapted by Tidyman and John D. F. Black; the film became the first entry in the Shaft franchise and marked Richard Roundtree’s first major film role.

Shaft matters as both fiction and source material because its character moved from the printed detective market into a major Hollywood film at a time when Black leading men were still sharply limited in mainstream studio production. The 1971 film helped establish Roundtree as an early Black action star and led to sequels and later revivals, including the 2000 film with Samuel L. Jackson. Dust jacket, covers, and pages clean.
