ALS : Autograph Letter Signed
American Colonization Society agent Ebenezer Burgess (1790-1870) was a clergyman and prominent citizen of Dedham, Massachusetts. In 1817, Burgess traveled to Africa on behalf of the American Colonization Society and assisted in founding the colony of Liberia. The American Colonization Society sought to resettle emancipated slaves and freeborn Black Americans in Africa and raised money to buy land in West Africa which would later become Liberia for the purpose of resettlement. The ACS was a controversial organization and overwhelmingly at odds with African American activists and white abolitionists. .Autograph lettersigned from Ebenzer Burgess to Mr. James Richard.
