Contemporary Artist Christo Signed 1981 Piece from the Era of Monumental Environmental Installation

Manuscripts & Autographs

Javacheff, Christo Vladimirov. Signed “Christo,” 1981, connects directly to the artist’s mature period of large-scale environmental art, when Christo and Jeanne-Claude were developing temporary public works that changed how museums, governments, landscapes, and mass audiences engaged with contemporary art. Christo was born in Gabrovo, Bulgaria in 1935, later worked with Jeanne-Claude on projects including Running Fence, The Pont Neuf Wrapped, Wrapped Reichstag, and The Gates, and became known for temporary installations shaped by planning, negotiation, landscape, fabric, and public access.

Signed artifact, dated 1981, bearing Christo’s hand-signed “Christo.” The year places the piece after Running Fence in California and before Surrounded Islands in Miami, within the period when the artist’s project drawings, signatures, and related documentary materials circulated as lasting records of works designed to be temporary.

Signed and dated in Christo’s hand, with no noted wear, near fine. A concise autograph document from a major figure in environmental and site-specific art, useful for documenting the artist’s public identity and the material traces of an intentionally ephemeral practice.
