First Edition. 8vo, 667pp. Original cloth covered board with decorated dust jacket and mylar wrapping. Published as an introductory survey of Latin American poetry following the death of Rubén Dario. Uncommon first collected edition of these Spanish-language poems, presented here both in Spanish and with English translations. An extensive anthology of Latin American poetical works by poets from Mexico, the Carribean, Central and South America. This bilingual composition includes work by Jorge Luis Borges, Pablo Neruda, José Ramón Heredia, Jacques Roumain, Nicolás Guillén, Carlos Pellicer, Miguel Angel Asturias, Carlos Drummond de Andrade, César Vallejo, Gabriela Mistral and many others. Among the earliest of its kind presenting modern Spanish-language poetry to an American audience, Latin American poetry became internationally recognized after the modernismo movement amidst the cultural and political upheavals that reigned throughout the 20th century. Minor toning to edges and a few small chips. Orignal owner's name inscribed on cover page dated 1944. Overall very good condition.
