Stereoview of an African American House Servant Holding a Tray
Photograph
Albumen stereoview of an African American house servant holding a tray. 6" x 3 1/8". The subject of this photograph is an older African American woman dressed in housemaid attire. She holds a duster upright in one hand. With the other, she balances a tray of indiscernible objects on her lap. There is a basket of various spools in the background. This is possibly from George Barnard's "South Carolina Views" series (1873-1880), a collection that focused on Black laborers in the Reconstruction South. Barnard is perhaps most famous for his photographic documentation of Civil War ruination and hardship, most of which he captured while under General Sherman's command. This inch picture is in very good condition; it is an fascinating cultural artifact of African-American domestic workers in the postwar South.Item #18593
