"Cleaver for President" Black Panther Bumper Sticker 1968
Non-Paper Memorabilia
Cleaver for President. Bumper sticker. Berkeley, CA: Berkeley Graphic Arts, [1968]. 154 7/8 x 4 in. printed orange bumper sticker. Reads "Cleaver for President" and bears the logos for the Peace and Freedom Party and The Black Panther Party. Though technically ineligible for the presidency due to his young age, Eldridge Cleaver was elected presidential nominee for the Peace and Freedom Party in 1968. With the goal of Black liberation and to end American Imperialism, Cleaver became an integral and notable force in Black radical activism. By 1965, Cleaver was determined to bring the late Malcolm X's dream of the Organization for African Unity. In detail, Cleaver was determined to dismantle racist, oppressive systems that were built to suppress the Black community. Cleaver had been released from incarceration two years prior and served as the spokesperson for Oakland's branch of the then brand-new Black Panther Party. In concurrence with his run, Cleaver was a fugitive of the state. During riots following MLK's assassination, he had led a group of protesters into a police ambush; this resulted in a shootout in which another unarmed Panther was killed. Come November's election, Cleaver received 36,571 votes. Fascinating piece of Black activist history in very good condition (minor adhesive bleed at top edge, unused with adhesive guards intact with some pulling apart).Item #18588
