Newspaper Defending Ricardo Chavez Ortiz, Chicano Activist and Plane Hijacker

Newspaper

Brochure in newspaper format calling for support of Ricardo Chavez Ortiz, who hijacked a Fronteri Arilines 737 from Albuquerque to Los Angeles to gain a public forum for injustice towards Chicanos. Independently published, possibly by the Chavez Defense Fund. He conducted interviews aboard the plane with Spanish-language stations, after which he surrendered control of the plane back to its pilot. He was arrested upon landing. The interior of the brochure shows family photographs and provides a hagiographic biography in Spanish, with one brief English section. The back cover advertises a mass gather at Lincoln Park and calls for financial support for his defense. Chavez Ortiz pleaded innocent on account of insanity, but was found guilty.
