A Project for a Railroad to the Pacific 1849

Pamphlet

Whitney, Asa. A Project for a Railroad to the Pacific. New York: George W. Wood, 1849. First edition. Octavo. :Lbrary stamp to bottom of title page. Comes with reports of committees of Congress, resolutions of state legislatures, etc. This pamphlet lays out Asa Whitney's visionary project to unite the east and west coasts by rail in full effect. It was so influential that Jefferson Davis, while Franklin Pierce's Secretary of War in the 1850s, fostered expeditions into the West to map out rail lines that would, in his view, geographically extend slave power. Tittle page chipped and two maps are missing, but the piece is overall in good condition.
