Covers are slightly toned with minor edgewear, including one small closed tear at bottom edge. 20 plates with tissue guards depicting French fashion from the times of the Romans to the Bourbon Restoration. Several editions of this work, some with 24 plates and some with 20, with this copy being a complete 20 plate edition. The drawings are light-hearted and creative, with one standout example that weaves a frigate into the elaborate hairdo of a lady of the court in the age of Louis XVI. "Travestissements" at the time meant fancy dress. These twenty plates offer an elegant and fantastical look at French women's fashion throughout the ages. Overall in very good condition.Item #17533
