Dreyfus, Alfred

Archive

Archive of 6 newspapers related to the Dreyfus Affair from both the American and French perspectives. 1897-1899. American and French papers. Measurements range from 23.5 x 17 inches and 13 x 10.5 inches. 80 pages. 1 issue of the San Jose Daily Mercury and 4 issues of the New York Herald give the American account of the story which heavily favors Dreyfus. One Herald story titled "Result of Race Hatred" reads in part, "Dreyfus hopes his own expiation will end racial feuds...he speaks very little and seems to suffer a partial paralysis of speech owing to his long silence. Even on board the SFax he had to communicate with officers by writing." French newspaper La Vie Illustree from August 1899 contains mostly photographs related to the 1899 second trial of Dreyfus. Alfred Dreyfus was a Jewish soldier in the French army convicted for treason in 1894. When new evidence came to light in 1896 identifying the traitor as a French Army major, the treasonous major was acquitted after a 2-day trial and new charges were brought against Dreyfus. Amid public outcry caused in part by the writer Emile Zola's fierce advocacy work, Dreyfus' case was reopened in 1899. One of the most famous trials in French history, the case played out on a world stage whose focus was drawn increasingly toward rising tensions within Europe that would define the first half of the 20th century. Light shedding does not affect text of images. Overall very good condition.
