First Edition

Graham Greene. This Gun For Hire. Garden City NY, 1936. Duodecimo. Beige covers and forest green spine labels, no dust jacket. This copy was the RKO Studio Library copy, marked as such by stamps on both pastedowns and a call number inked on the spine,The movie version was filmed right next door, at Paramount, in 1942. Graham Greene's novel This Gun for Hire was published in the U.S. in 1936, and this is the true first edition. At the time, several movie studios considered obtaining rights to the book. These included RKO, 20th Century Fox and Paramount Pictures. Eventually, Paramount bought the rights in 1936, however, the film was not made for several more years; it was reactivated in 1941, with Frank Tuttle assigned as director.[7] The book's plot line was kept essentially unchanged, though moved from the original European and British setting to an American one. The 1942 film starring Veronica Lake and Alan Ladd was a huge success. This Gun for Hire is considered by many modern sources as one of the first important pictures in the "film noir" genre. First edition with a great association, in very good condition.
