Press photograph, 1975, depicting Sheikh Suhaim bin Hamad Al Thani, Qatar’s first Minister of Foreign Affairs, three years after his appointment to the newly established post in 1972. Qatar had declared independence in September 1971 and joined the United Nations the same month; Suhaim’s tenure therefore coincided with the country’s early development of an independent diplomatic service and formal relations with foreign states. Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs identifies him as the state’s first foreign minister, appointed on February 23, 1972.

Original gelatin silver print black-and-white press photograph, dated 1975 on the verso and measuring 5 x 6.5 inches. Sheikh Suhaim appears in formal portrait, wearing a thobe and ghutra secured with an agal. The closely framed image concentrates on the minister’s head and upper body, presenting the official responsible for Qatar’s foreign relations during the first years following independence. The 1975 date places the image during Sheikh Khalifa bin Hamad Al Thani’s reorganization and expansion of the Qatari government, a period in which diplomatic relations were being established with additional countries at ambassadorial level.
