U.S. Navy aviator family photo album documenting Captain George M. "Zeke" Zaludek Mediterranean deployment aboard USS Independence (CVA 62), 1968 to 1969, constructed expressly for his wife Shirley and their five children as an account of his military life ,shipboard, flying, and absence from home. Captain George Michael "Zeke" Zaludek was a distinguished and highly decorated United States Navy pilot who served with honor over a multi-decade naval career. Born in 1934, in Shickshinny, Pennsylvania, he spent his later years residing in Coronado, California. He was a recognized member of the Tailhook Association's Grand Club, an elite group of naval aviators celebrated for achieving over 1,000 carrier-arrested landings ("traps"). Zaludek organized the album around the language of fatherhood, explaining carrier operations through captions including “This is Dad’s ship,” “Dad’s in the Air Department,” “Dad’s normal work day,” and “Just finished flying, now the paperwork!” His opening artwork identifies the cruise as “USS Independence CVA 62 / Med Cruise / 26 July 1968,” while a later photograph captioned “Heading home January 1969, full speed ahead” closes the deployment. Independence was then operating with the U.S. Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean, carrying Carrier Air Wing Seven during a deployment that ended January 27, 1969; its embarked aviation units included fighter, attack, reconnaissance, electronic warfare, helicopter, and airborne early warning squadrons.

Photo album containing 31 items, comprising 28 photographs, two original hand drawn works by Zaludek, and one Christmas card incorporating a photograph of USS Independence, photographs measuring approximately 2 x 3 to 8 x 10 inches, Mediterranean, 1968 to 1969. The opening artwork states that the book was “especially prepared for Shirley Zaludek and the Zaludek children” and depicts Shirley above individually labeled portraits of Mike, Sue, Tim, Chris, and Danny, followed by a self portrait labeled “From their daddy who loves them” and a drawing of the family dog, “Sniffer too.” Most photographs carry typed captions written for this domestic audience. Large views show Independence underway and “cruising in the Med,” while flight deck photographs record aircraft “getting ready to go,” an A 4 approaching the steam catapult, an E 2 airborne early warning aircraft being launched, and personnel working around aircraft on deck. Other photographs move inside the Air Department: Zaludek poses at a desk after flying, two men work telephones and paperwork under the caption “Get that airplane fixed!,” a formal group portrait is labeled “Dad’s in the Air Department,” and smaller color photographs show a “normal work day.” Formal portraits identify his commanding officers as Captain H. S. Mathews and Commander J. L. Uncapher, while a signed photograph captioned “Dad went to school last year” records Zaludek receiving congratulations from Vice Admiral John T. Hayward. A photograph made during liberty shows a laughing Zaludek beneath the caption “A bit of relaxation and some wine Spanish style.” The Christmas card bears a photograph of Independence, “Greetings of the Season and Best Wishes for the New Year,” and a handwritten “Merry Christmas from Athens 1968,” preserving the family correspondence function that governs the album.

The album records carrier aviation during a period when Independence had recently returned from direct participation in the Vietnam War but remained part of the Cold War naval presence maintained by the Sixth Fleet. Commissioned in 1959, the Forrestal class attack carrier had deployed to the South China Sea in 1965, becoming the first Atlantic Fleet carrier sent there in support of Vietnam operations and receiving the Navy Unit Commendation for that deployment. During the 1968 to 1969 cruise represented here, Independence operated across the Mediterranean with documented calls including Athens, Valletta, Istanbul, Cannes, Palma de Mallorca, Genoa, Taranto, and other Mediterranean ports; VAW 124 records place the carrier in Sixth Fleet operations through January 1969 and identify Captain H. S. Mathews as its commanding officer. Zaludek’s album translates that institutional environment into a father’s explanation of military work for children at home: catapult launches become “getting ready to go,” maintenance becomes “Get that airplane fixed!,” and formal command portraits sit beside drawings of Shirley, five children, and the family dog. Later, in the 70's Captain Zaludek served as the Commanding Officer of the amphibious transport dock USS Vancouver (LPD-2). Moderate wear to album covers and binding, with losses at corners and spine, toning and occasional spotting to mounts, and generally well preserved photographs. Overall in good condition. A first person family record of how a deployed naval aviator represented Cold War carrier service, technical labor, Mediterranean travel, and separation from home to his wife and children.
