Three issues of Stewart Brand's Whole Earth Catalog, 1969 to 1971, documenting the publication's role in joining American counterculture, environmental thought, civil rights era politics, feminism, alternative education, and emerging technological culture. Published by the Portola Institute under the motto "access to tools," the catalog promoted self education, ecological awareness, communal living, independent publishing, small scale technology, and personal agency at the height of the late 1960s counterculture.

The Spring 1969 issue opens with the catalog's "Function" and "Purpose," including the declaration, "We are as gods and might as well get good at it." The July 1970 issue includes catalog corrections, mail order listings, and resources on environmental design, independent education, media, cybernetics, and personal transformation. The Last Whole Earth Catalog expands the project across more than four hundred pages, with sections on Buckminster Fuller, homebuilding, wilderness skills, alternative schools, aviation, photography, computing, radical periodicals, Black political literature, women's resources, and community organization

These issues show how the Whole Earth Catalog placed back to the land environmentalism beside social movement politics and technological experimentation. Visible pages include a Black Reading List featuring James Baldwin and Malcolm X, women's resources, antiwar and conscientious objector materials, alternative school listings, Sierra Club publications, National Geographic, camera manuals, aircraft plans, and order forms for tools and books. General edge wear, rubbing, creasing, toning, and handling marks; Spring 1969 and July 1970 with moderate cover wear; The Last Whole Earth Catalog with worn extremities and spine creasing. Overall good condition. A three issue record of the printed culture that connected ecology, civil rights, feminism, communal living, self education, and the early tool based imagination of Northern California technological culture.
