Photo Archive
[African American] [Music] Sarah Vaughan, Two time grammy winning and 9 time grammy nominee jazz singer photo archive. Photo Archive of 5 vintage black and white silver gelatin photos, 3 being press releases, and 2 smaller candid shots of her singing in a jazz club. Measurements range from 8” x 10” fro the Press photos, and 3” x 4” for the Jazz Club photographs. Press photos have captions en verso. With pioneering Black jazz musicians such as Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday paving the way, Vaughan went on to be internationally recognized and praised for her operatic vocal richness and variety. Two small photographs shows Vaughan in the earlier stages of her career in the 1950s, on a stage in a small jazz club donning a short and sleek haircut and sleeveless dress typical of the era. The candid photographs seem to be taken by an audience member and evoke a moody rawness focusing on Vaughan and capturing a Black pianist in the background. A studio portrait of Vaughan from 1961 was published by her agency and has a news clipping en verso which announces Vaughan’s appearance alongside Ray Charles and comedian Larry Storch at the Palace Theatre on Broadway. Two other photographs are from the 1970s in which Vaughan had already been established as an award winning artist. In one photograph she appears on stage alongside Pearl Bailey and Ella Fitzgerald for the first time ever for a CBS music variety special celebrating Bailey’s 40 year career. The last photo shows Bailey with a drapey 1970s dress, fashioning an afro, big earrings, and holding a mic. At the time of Jim Crow laws and segregation, music was a way for Black Americans to be integrated into the everyday American's household. With Black Americans charting billboards in the genres of jazz, rhythm & blues, and even pop and doo-wop, their popularity in the entertainment sphere helped gain the respects of white Americans. Minor edge wear, archive in overall very good condition.Item #20839
