Photo Archive

[Motorcycle Culture] [Woman Liberation] Women defying cultural and gender norms by riding motorcycles in the early to middle 20th century. Archive of 28 vintage photographs of women on motorcycles, mostly from the 1940s to the 1950s. Photographs are black and white silver gelatin prints and range in size from 2.5" x 3.5" to 4"x 6". Some of the photographs in this archive invert gender roles, including two in which women steer motorcycles with men in sidecars and one in which a woman sits on the front seat with a man behind her. Others depict women who may not ascribe to heteronormative expectations, such as one in which two women in headscarves hold hands posing with a bike and another in which the rider appears to be a butch woman in masculine clothing. Most of the bikes shown in the photos are large cruisers and touring bikes. In very good condition overall. A collection of photographs documenting women in motorcycle culture through the 40s and 50s.
