New York and London: Harper & Brothers, Publishers. 1928. First edition, early printing. This book is a collection of African American folk tales done in "a negro dialect" of New Orleans. It is the author's first book. This story was later made into the 1936 movie The Green Pastures, one of only six feature films in the Hollywood Studio era to feature an all-black cast. 8vo., 264 pp., illustrated with black and white drawings. Bradford is a white author who was inspired by African American preachers and recorded sermons of Black proletarian ministers of the time. His main inspiration came from Rev. John Wesley Henning who told imaginative Biblical stories told through the Southern African-American lens.Light Blue cloth with titles in black; in yellow and light blue, checkered original dust jacket. The dust jacket has some edge wear, and the previous owner's name on the front. Overall very good condition.
