First Edition

[African American Plays] [WWII] D'USSEAU, Arnaud and James Gow. Deep are the Roots: A Play in Three Acts. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons. First Edition. 1946. Cloth board and illustrated dust jacket. 8vo; 205pp. The play follows the story of a young African American man who comes back home from WWII as a decorated soldier. The play deals with bi-racial love, racism, classism, and justice. Deep are the Roots ran for 477 performances, closing in November 1946. The New York Times noted at the time that Deep Are the Roots did not "shy away from a problem" – racism in the Southern United States. It's modern day relevance on prejudices lent the play to being revived in 2012 by the Metropolitan Playhouse. Overall very good condition.
