[African American] Two 19th Century Albumen Photographs capturing African American and White graduates posing with their diplomas. Each measure 10" x 7". These professional photographs were taken in a studio, set with decorative backdrop, chairs, and a table with books atop. In both photographs one young African American graduate sits alongside her White peers, holding diplomas, posing for formal graduation photos. The young women all wear matching white corseted dresses, covering their necks down to their ankles. The young men wear blazers, ties, and dress pants as they pose for the photographs. Both photographs have the same group of graduating students in their attire, but one image includes a older couple in the center, probably their teachers. In one photograph, an older man and woman sit in the middle of the graduates, presumably the parents of some of the students. A small, leafy branch is pinned on each of the graduate's dresses and blazers. A young woman leans against a stack of books, one of which appears to be Heroes of the Dark Continent. A powerful portrayal of strides in Black education. Both albumen photographs are in very good condition.
