Photo Archive

[African American Film] An invaluable source for live footage of prominent Black musicians of the era. All Black Cast: Harlem Rock'n Roll (Rock'n Roll Revue) Archive of 3 Original Photo Lobby Cards. Grand Alliance/British Lion Films, 1955. This archive includes 3 vintage silver gelatin black and white photo lobby cards. Each measure 10" x 8". Harlem Rock'n Roll (Rock'n Roll Revue) is a 1955 American film directed by Joseph Kohn. The film is also known as Harlem Rock 'n' Roll (in the United Kingdom) and Rock and Roll Review (American alternative title). In essence, the film compiled unique performances from prominent Black artists of the era---including Larry Darnell and the Delta Rhythm Boys---and "remains invaluable as a source for some of the best live footage of these performers in existence". One lobby card features a portrait of famed Jazz artist, Duke Ellington, as he smiles into a distance. Another lobby card features a portrait of Nat King Cole, capturing him in a plaid suit and a tie. Another lobby card captures, American rhythm and blues/doo-wop vocal group who became one of the biggest selling acts of the 1950's. The members smile for the camera they pose with a guitar. All lobby cards have captions on their margins, highlighting the cast and title in bold lettering. A powerful illustration of Black music, this archive is in very good condition.
