Photo Archive

[Film] Marlon Brando in On The Waterfront, directed by Elia Kazan. Archive of 6 original silver gelatin vintage photographs used as lobby cards in movie theaters. Columbia Pictures, 1960. All are 8" x 10" and in glossy black and white. On The Waterfront is based on several Pulitzer Prize-winning articles about an ex-prize fighter turned New Jersey longshoreman who stands up to his corrupt union bosses and their extortion, violence and racketeering. The film is well-known for Brando's use of method acting and established a more stripped-down and improvisational style that changed the industry. The film also marked a transition in American filmmaking from the big-budget productions of the west coast to the rough-and-tumble style of the east coast. The film earned 12 Academy Award nominations and won 8 and is considered groundbreaking for its political themes and unconventional style. Photos feature images of Brando in the film alongside Eva Marie Saint, along with a still image on Brando on a boat and being questioned by reporters. All photos capture the gritty texture and realism of the film. Most have the films title, production credits and copyright date in lower white margin, with one having a stamp on verso reading: "Motion Picture & TV Research Service." All in very good condition.
