Wild West Archive of 12 Albumen Photographs

Photo Archive

Wild West Archive of twelve 19th century original albumen photographs. Ranging from 4" x 5" to 8.25" x 11" on a 11.5" x 14" mat. Nine of the smaller photos were printed by Bogardus Photographer, 363 Broadway, cor. Frankling Street, N.Y. Abraham Bogardus was a prolific photographer and daguerrotypist who was active between the 1840s and 1880s. Three photos are mounted on one large sheet and on verso have a political cartoon and an albumen studio photograph of a circus character. Photos depict horses, mules, passengers traveling by wagon, ranches, rugged outdoor campsites, rudimentary dwellings, Native Americans, cattle branding, and finally a stunning shot of a wild-eyed hunter and his partner standing over the corpse of a great stag with full antlers that they had just shot with their rifles. One photo shows what appears to be a family sitting in a courtyard outside their low rise western log cabin. An older man sits with his wife placing her hand on his shoulder and two other young adults, possibly his son and daughter, standing near him. The women are dressed in long, high collar 19th century dresses, and the older man and his son have Western workwear on: wide brimmed hats, heavy-duty pants, and high boots. They are positioned near a large rock pile and the young man carries a metal bucket, next to a pile of rocks, which may be part of a construction project. Hard, physical work was a daily fact of life in the West and these photos reflect how these settlers made a living off of the land. Finally, we see one photo of a lone Native woman wrapped in a woolen shawl and mounted on a horse that is dragging a long wooden rod propping up a small wooden cage that two young children are bundled up in. She is alone on a dusty shrubland plain with her children in tow, an evocative sight that suggests that this woman could be a refugee on her own land, like so many other Natives during this time. A powerful visual history of the Wild West. Some minor cracking and foxing to photograph mats, some minor toning to a few images, however mats are firm, adhesive is strong, and photographs are clear. In very good condition overall.
