Photo Archive

[African American- Film] The Defiant Ones Archive of 11 Original Lobby Cards and Photographs. United Artists Corporation, 1958. The three lobby cards are 14" x 11" and in vibrant color. The eight photographs are 10" x 8" and black and white . The Defiant Ones is a 1958 adventure drama film which tells the story of two escaped prisoners, one white and one black, who are shackled together and who must co-operate in order to survive. It stars Sidney Poitier and Tony Curtis. Sidney Poitier is featured in each of the lobby card images. In one image, Poitier and Curtis are seen shackled together by chains, whilst the vibrant stills portray them free and unchained. In another image, Poitier lies asleep on a table, as co-star Cara Williams rushes to wake him. The film was considered "provocative" at the time because of its emphasis on racism and "its call for racial harmony". The movie established a significant pattern both for Poitier himself and for other Black actors who succeeded him: by refusing roles that played onto detrimental racial stereotypes, One Photo has an annotations on the margin, not affecting the image. One Photo has a stamp on verso "Motion Picture Research Service.." All 11 photographs and lobby cards are bright and overall in very good condition.
