Photo Album

US Army soldier in the Engineering Corps stationed in postwar West Germany of the mid 1940's, Vintage Photo album. The album includes 237 black and white silver gelatin photos measuring between 2.25" x 2.5" to 7" x 8.5". Photos of soldiers at military installations in Hanover, Hanau, Ansbach, and in the agricultural and woodland periphery. Many shots of the troops roaming through a bombed out town center, full of apartment buildings with bullet ridden facades and a wrecked hotel. As they are in an Engineer corps, the soldiers can be seen operating heavy machinery such as tractors and bulldozers. While they were primarily involved in planning and building military infrastructure, these soldiers remained combat ready if need be, as we can see in one photo with them practicing shooting at a rifle range in "Badville". We believe these soldiers were part of the 599th or 581st Engineers, whose depot is pictured in one photo. The 599th was stationed in Hanau in 1946, the Hanau bridge depot was selected as a control storage point and vast quantities of equipment were gathered from the dumps in England, France, Germany and from all of the other Western European countries, and shipped to this depot. At Hanau, this material had to be identified, classified, stored, unserviceable items disposed of, and serviceable items put into proper issue condition. This album documents the soldiers life in post war Germany, doing the imediate after war rebuilding but also enjoying the good times on deployment as well, with photos of them fully outfitted playing baseball, hockey, at a dance, and having drinks with their fellow troops. Additionally, there are several photos of our soldier pictured with a young woman, possibly a love interest he met while on duty and there is also one 8.5" x 7" photo of the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. One loose album page; some chipping to page margins throughout; photos clean and sharp. In very good condition overall.
