Photo Archive

Photo Archive of 82 high-definition color and B&W photographs of automatic weapons, mounted guns, pistols, and vehicles, including an M113 armored personnel carrier (APC), believed to be taken at the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant in the late 1960's or early 1970s in Independence, Missouri. Photos mostly 8" x 10" with some measuring 3" x 4". The Lake City plant was was established in 1941 by Remington to manufacture and test small caliber ammunition for the US Army. Remington, Colt, and Winchester along some smaller gun manufacturers are represented. There are also photos of ammunition, with some being X-Rays, and depict many different calibers including the 7.52 mm and 5.56 mm cartridges. A photo of a Colt revolver shows what appears to be a production date stamp of 1971 underneath the chamber, so the photos were probably taken in 1971 or some time thereafter. Several black and white photos are devoted to the infamous Tommy Gun, outfitted with a drum magazine, as well as what appears to be an M-16, also with a drum magazine and mounted on tripod. Two color photos show the M113 Armored Personnel Carrier (APC) and also included are images of the Ford-Philco GAU-7/A Gatling, a prototype machine gun that was to be mounted on the iconic F-15 fighters, and was piloted in the 1960s before its 1974 cancellation. A few photos of workers at the plant show them speaking before a pile of shells on a nearby table. This plant and others like it were the workhorses that supplied the wars waged in Vietnam and elsewhere. The photos are in plastic sleeves inside a ring-bound binder. Some age-related toning to photos, nonetheless in very good condition overall.
