Tan paper covers with an illustration of d'Eon holding a fencing sword with a Sphinx behind her, representing the prowess and mysteries of the Chevalier. 8vo. 382 pages. Text is in French. Illustrated by the author. Inscribed by the author who was also a French sportsman, who pioneered physical activities into education and was the referee for fencing at the 1900 Olympic Games in Paris. His most famous work is on the autobiography of the flamboyant life of female aristocrat and duelist, La Maupin. Fradin would combine these two elements in writing the biography of eccentric socialite, soldier, and spy, the Chevalier d'Eon who, in her later years, would become famous for her fencing tournaments. The first page is inscribed by the author to his printer and translates to "Mister Rosetti, who made me wait, but printed me a beautiful book. Affectionately yours, Gabriel Letainturier, 17 Nov. 1901" Multiple prints of ink illustrations throughout. Binding is loose with some of the first pages separated. However, the book was never read, and some of the edges are uncut. Minor foxing to front pages. Text and illustrations are crisp and clear. Overall very good condition.
