A collection of eight original military holiday dinner menus. Includes menus from the US Army and Navy for Independence Day, Thanksgiving, Armistice Day, and Navy Day, 1940-45. The 4th of July, Navy Day, and Armistice Day menus are from the U.S.S. Pine Island, two of which are at the Sasebo, Japan naval base and the earliest menu was created for the 189th Field Artillery at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma on Thanksgiving, 1940. Measures 7" x 5.5." Original paper wrappers with attractive artwork. The Thanksgiving menu includes the original ornamental napkin with the menu and roster of the 189th, as well as a "wooden certificate" voucher that was exchangeable in any store or bank in the "Cherokee Strip" region of Oklahoma, near the Kansas border. This menu also has an original autograph signatures from multiple attendants of the dinner on the inside front cover. The food served at these dinners did not vary much, with most being American classics; Roast Young Tom Turkey, Virginia Baked Ham, Mashed Potatoes, Apple Pie, and other holiday staples. Also includes Four holiday dinner napkins from the 70th Service Squadron Thanksgiving and Christmas celebration, 1929-31. each approximately 14" x 14". Original thematic artwork of turkeys, cornucopias, and holly leaves. These menues have a full roster of the soldiers in the 70th Service Squadron, ordered by rank. The 70th Service Squadron was stationed at March Field in California, a key training and bombardment facility during that period that was located near Riverside, California. The 70th Air Service squadron was a unit in the US Army Air Corps, established in 1926 and a predecessor to our modern Air Force. An interesting and wonderfully preserved commemoration of communal life in the American military. Overall in very good condition.
