The History of Woman Suffrage, Vol. 1, 1881 First Edition

First Edition

First Edition of History of Woman's Suffrage Volume I. An important early history of women's suffrage written by notable participants Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and Matilda Joslyn Gage. New York: Fowler & Wells, 1881. Large Octavo. First Edition, First Printing. The first of two volumes. Complete as published, but expanded until 1922 to eventually include six volumes, long after the initial participants were dead. Volume I chronicles the women's suffrage movement from 1848 - 1861, with some coverage on preceding events that gave shape to the women's movement, such as the Wrold's Anti-Slavery Convention. This volume gives a special focus to the cross-pollination between the antislavery movement and early suffragists, including profiles on figures who played major roles in both camps, such as Lucretia Mott and Lydia Maria Child. The landmark 1848 Seneca Falls Convention is thoroughly covered in Chapter IV. Additionally, in this period, the fateful partnership between Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony was founded, which is recounted in Chapter XIII. The complete work is considered to be the major source for primary documentation about the women's suffrage movement from its beginnings through the ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which enfranchised women in the U.S. in 1920. Illustrated with multiple steel engravings of the heroines of the suffrage movement. Original burgundy publisher's cloth, spines gilt title. Some shelfwear, boards slightly rubbed, spine sunned. Overall in very good condition.
