FURR, Arthur. Democracy's Negroes. Boston, Massachusetts: The House of Edinboro, 1947. 315pp. 12mo. Black and white photographs throughout. Signed and dated by Furr with a note to a friend mentioned in the dedication. The inscription reads "To Mr. Monroe Mason. A former co-author, war buddy and friend who has done much to encourage the production and presentation of this volume. Arthur F. Furr. Feb. 18, 1947." The book's contents correspond to the roles of African American soldiers and their various units and regiments including the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Corps, and the Coast Guard. One chapter is entirely dedicated to women in the war effort including WANDS, an all African American women's unit. Dedications to specific individuals are titled heroes and gives brief descriptions of their biography and role in the war. One mention of a man named Dorie Miller mentions him as "...the first Negro to be commended in World War II...'for his distinguished devotion to duty, extraordinary courage and disregard for his own personal safety during the attack [on Pearl Harbor].' " A photo of Miller being pinned with a Navy Cross by General Nimitz is printed clearly on it's own page. More than one million African American men and women served in every branch of the US armed forces during World War II. This book showcases a thorough historical outline and recognition of the efforts of black Americans fighting for a country that had yet to fight for their rights at home. Very light shelfwear to top and bottom of spine, pages and text are crisp and clear. Overall very good condition.
