Dawson was deployed during WWI in the segregated 366th Infantry Regiment of the United States Army from 1917-1919, this speech exemplifies the ongoing battle to oppose the resegregation of the US Armed Forces; Dawson was a vocal critic of this and his efforts ultimately contributed to preventing the resegregation of the US military.
