Tintype Photograph of Well-Dressed African American Woman

African American, Tintype

Original Photo

19th century Tintype Photograph of African American woman wearing a beautiful pleated Victorian dress .The woman in the picture is posed standing and dress and hat. Her fashion appears to be the immediate post-Civil War era. The emancipation of slaves and the 13th amendment in 1865 coincided with tintypes enjoying their most popular usage. This image portrays the recently found freedom of African Americans, and some of the subjects of these photographs may have born into slavery. The young woman in this photo is very well-dressed and wears an expensive looking elaborate outfit. She is wearing a thick satiny pleated dress with fringe, what appears to be a velvet overcoat donning a brooch, white gloves with a matching white ladies' hat, and sporting earrings & a necklace. Her outfit and accessories suggest her aspiration toward an upper class status. Tintype measures at 3" 3/16 x 2" with minor wear, and slightly clipped corners on one side, otherwise in very good condition.
