MARKO, Safo. linocut print poster of modern woman warrior. Measures with her 17" x 22". Black and white, Marked with the artist's initials and date, "SM-73," on bottom corner. Depicts an armed woman in military uniform holding an assault rifle at the foreground representing the Albanian People's Army during WWII. Behind her are four other female soldiers, one in defensive fighting position, three others in air strategy as enemy parachutes land overhead. Female Albanian artist Safo Marko, a member of the National Liberation movement, showcases the importance of female partisans in Albania's defense against Italian fascist regime. W.W.II required the aid of women even in military positions. After the war, the country was ruled by Enver Hoxha. Under Hoxha, women were allowed in universities, and given opportunities in the workplace. Marko's bold lined graphic style creates an empowering and dynamic visualization of women's fight against social and class struggle. Overall very good condition.
