Yearbook

Yearbook for Elizabeth College, a women's higher educational institution. 1914. The Elizabethan. Black leather soft covers measuring 8.5 x 11 inches. 135 pages with additional advertisements at back. Elizabeth College opened in 1897 in Charlotte, North Carolina as a four-year school for women sponsored by the Evangelical Lutheran Church. It's vision was "to afford a broad and liberal culture for women; to furnish to young women an education in the classics, mathematics and sciences." Before the educational reforms of the progressive era, schools adopted "differentiated curriculum" along gender lines, with professional training for men and domestication for women. Yearbook includes school songs and student poems written as tributes to classmates and faculty, rosters with photos for clubs and sports teams, class photos and school calendars. Elizabeth College eventually moved to Virginia where a fire in 1921 destroyed most of its records. This yearbook captures the importance of the institution and those like it for the women it prepared for a new century. Front cover with small chips and tears to edges. Hinge cracked and textblock partially detached. Some shedding. Overall good condition.
