Hand Colored Lithographs of North American Native Chiefs, 1855

Native American , North America

Print

Archive of 4 original hand colored lithographs of Native chiefs from McKenney & Hall's History of the Indian Tribes of North America. Rice, Rutter & Co Publishers: Philadelphia, 1855. Measures 6.5 x 10.25 inches. Lithographs show images of chiefs from the Fox, Winnebago, Otto and Cherokee tribes with names and plate numbers beneath them. Images are colorful with vivid details of each man in ceremonial dress. In one, the Fox chief Ne-Sou-A-Quoit rests one hand on a spear, his expression firm but eyes gentle in a face colored red with paint. His headdress is a vibrant blue, feathers at either shoulder and an animal fur across his bare chest. A silver medallion in the style of European cameos hangs from his neck. The differences in the men's ornamentation is a demonstration of the vast diversity represented across North American tribes. Light toning to the edges dose not affect images. Pin-size holes along the edges where plates were attached to spine do not affect images. Overall very good condition.
