Book of Japanese woodblock prints showing samurai in battle and other scenes. 1852. Measures 5 x 7 inches. Bound in soft brown leather wrappers with red string binding. 50 pages. Book includes pages of characters in column form but is predominately woodblock illustrations. The woodblocks are meticulously illustrated scenes depicting adventures of the Samurai. The Samurai are often depicted dueling, with one illustration showing a male and female warrior in tense combat. Female warriors were called onna-musha and were part of the bushi warrior caste in feudal Japan, and were often married to samurai. The illustrations show detail down to each individual scale on the Samurai's lamellar armor. Small ink stains to first few pages do not affect image or text. Rubbing to wrappers and light shelfwear. Overall very good condition.Item #18331
