Samurai Woodblock Print. 1847. Ichinoya-Kassen. Measures 14 x 9.5 inches. Ukiyoe Utagawa Yoshitora Sumurai, Genpei Seisiki. This image shows 2 samurais riding on horses and sword drawn in full battle gear with body armor worn (dou or dō), a third samourai also in armor on foot still has his katana sword on his belt but fighting with a long lance. The Samurais all 3 have great details, all wear a dō, a chest armour made up of iron and or leather plates , Kusazuri made from iron or leather plates hanging from the front and back of the dou (dō) to protect the lower body and upper leg. Sode, large rectangular shoulder protection made from iron and or leather plates. Kote were made from cloth covered with iron plates of various size and shape, connected by chain armour (kusari). Kabuto, a helmet made from iron or leather plates. A neck guard shikoro made from several layers of curved iron or leather strips was suspended from the bottom edge of the kabuto. Haidate, thigh guards which tied around the waist and covered the thighs. Suneate, shin guards made from iron splints connected together by chain armour (kusari) and sewn to cloth and tied around the calf. The image is beautiful with mountains and ocean waves in classic Japanese style behind them. Artistically hand colored with soft red hues that turn into blues and details and colors vivid and rich. Borders are shipped but do not affect image. A very powerful and beautiful image.
