The Negro in the Civil War, Study of Black Resistance, 1938
First Edition
Herbert Aptheker. The Negro in the Civil War. International Publishers: New York, 1938. First edition. 5.25 x 8 inches. 48 pages. Soft covers with navy blue text blocks. Part of a series of booklets written by Aptheker to describe the struggle for emancipation. "For two hundred years the American Negro people waged a persistent struggle against the diabolical system of chattel slavery, which was devised and continued for their super exploitation. For sheer courage and ingenuity this conflict has never been surpassed in all the vast history of man's revolutionary struggles," Aptheker writes. Herbert Aptheker wrote extensively about the African American experience with particular interest in its resistance movements. In her memoir, Bettina Aptheker speculated that her father's interest in African American struggle stemmed from the shame he felt about what he saw as Jewish acquiescence in the face of the holocaust. Toning to front and back soft covers does not affect text. Text block tight and clean. Overall very good condition.Item #18321
