Headline reads, "American Quaker named mayor of Jerusalem as hour for end of British mandate over Palestine draws near; Jews prepare to proclaim their new Palestine state at moment British terminate authority; Arabs reported posed for invasion.” The League of Nations Mandate for Palestine following World War I would end as the Palestinian war raged, expelling half of prewar Palestine's Arab population from their homes.
