Diploma from the Shelbyville Female College in Kentucky. 1862. Measures 18 x 13.5 inches. Awarded to Miss Melissa A Wilson. Beneath school name in large, decorative text across top of certificate is an illustration of the school. Women's colleges, often called "finishing schools" were most often the only option for women pursuing higher education in the mid 19th century. Educational activists like Catharine E Beecher advocated fiercely against for women's right to enter any college. Such advocacy was based on the belief that gender equality was contingent on the quality of female education with fully integrated institutional opportunities to support it. Light foxing does not affect text or image. Tears to edges do not affect text. Overall good condition.Item #18302
